Rose quartz with preserved remains of Salvelinus fontinalis, an ancient ancestor of the brook trout from the Triassic Period. Discovered at a dig in Wyoming, this specimen is unique for the near complete preservation of the fish, much like insects imbedded in amber.
Incredible tectonic forces pressed remains from an ancient sea and under heat and pressure formed the quartz which encases this specimen.

GRAND OPENING GALA
The Long Island City Museum of Natural History is opening its doors on Saturday, May 31 with an inaugural exhibition featuring the highlights of our collection, including a special reception in the Ron W. Pallaka Regional Wing.
The Grand Opening Gala will be the premier of our exciting collection, featuring live music, and cocktails.

ONLINE COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCED
Full collection to be available free of charge beginning early 2009
As part of an initiative supported by generous donations from the Ford Foundation and Con Edison, the Long Island City Museum of Natural History will be creating an online archive of its entire collection to be accessible to the public free of charge.
The Museum is committed to universal access and will be developing this service during 2008, with a scheduled launch in early 2009. For more information, or on how you can support this unique program, please contact the Museum.
